About Oakwood Honeys and Bee Pollen

Like fine wine, honey has some of the engaging qualities of enjoyment, such as color and taste. The color can range from the palest of straw yellow to a deep orange amber with hints of pomegranate red. The taste can range from a flower nectar delicacy to a palette-pounding zestfulness that, were it a chili pepper, it might numb your tongue. Just kidding, but it can be pretty intense.

We currently produce three varieties of honey:

Oakwood Honey, Castle Rock, Colorado     Oakwood Honey

Our flagship honey, Oakwood is full-flavored with color ranging from medium light to dark in color. It is the best organic wildflower honey in Douglas County, and it is our best-selling honey.

I have often wanted to create, like the winemakers, a reserve library of past Oakwood honeys. Then some Sunday morning do a bee-vertical. That is, take out the honey from each year and taste it side by side with its cousins. The only problem has been that I just never have any honey left over to do this. My customer base keeps on insisting that I sell it all.

You should hear some of the stories (that is a kind way to say excuses) that I get from folks on why I should sell those last few jars. "My grandmother is dying and she wants some before she goes, you wouldn’t deny her would you?" (This guy, I think, has about 10 grandmothers - he keeps using the same reason). "My child has allergies and this is the only thing that works!" (Their kid graduated college 3 years ago!). "It helps with my insomnia, I mix it with a bit of Jack Daniels and it is the perfect balance between sweet and intense, plus I'll throw a bottle of Jack to you" (this excuse usually works pretty well).

Anyway you get the picture.

Oakwood Living Daylight Honey, Castle Rock, Colorado     Living Daylight Honey

Wet years tend to produce our rarest and most sought after product, the champagne of honey.

Like Dom Perignon, the legendary Benedictine monk who serendipitously discovered champagne and is said to have exclaimed "Come quickly I am drinking the stars," Living Daylight was also a serendipitous discovery. Of course there are those who say, "No, 'tis not fate but destiny."

Whichever story is yours, Living Daylight captures perfectly on the palette its special reflection of the sun. Living Daylight is best enjoyed on hot English Muffins with a bit of melted butter. Living Daylight is not just honey on a bun . . . it is an experience.

Krueger's 3-Sting Honey, Castle Rock, Colorado     Krueger's 3-Sting Honey

As robust-flavored as The Living Daylight is refined, 3-sting is the metaphorical equivalent, in modern suburban form, of ground rhinoceros horn. It is not just food . . . it is an event.

The name 3-Sting Honey comes from a couple of things. One is the taste, which is much more robust, as noted above. I would say that 3-Sting is as robust as the Living Daylight is delicate.

I once had a hive of bees that were basically not very hard working. They hung around mostly on the bee veranda and exchanged bee stories, talked about the weather and who would make the playoffs I think . . .   I thought they would be easy to "work," but I found out different — when it came to harvest the honey, they went berserk!!! I had a major league bee "runaway" and got stung many many times through some of the holes in my suit and around my wrists and ankles, not to mention the stings from a number of hearty blokes who managed to penetrate the suit.

When a hive "erupts" you have a major league "beemergency."

Well, that is how 3-Sting was born. Maybe I should have called it 35-sting but that seemed a bit too much . . .

For centuries health ensusiasts have known about the taste and restorative powers of bee pollen. What could be more original than the power of the flower concentrated into its natural form as pollen? Perhaps it will improve your overall health, make your skin smoother and softer, improve your IQ and sex life, and help to cure allergies. Or even, who knows . . . help you get a better mortgage or a higher paying job?
